The Untamed Mind Is a Wild Horse

What do I mean by an ‘untamed mind?’ The word untamed means wild, undomesticated, uncultivated, and feral. The untamed mind is running amuck in its own natural habitat, undomesticated, not harnessed and running feral, all over your life. This is not the fault of the mind, for the mind is only doing what the mind does naturally until you begin to tame it.

I am not the first to use the analogy of the mind being like wild horses, but let’s look at that for just a moment. Wild horses are amazingly beautiful, and majestic out in the wild, but because of the wildness, their strengths are not useful from a human perspective. Once tamed, their strength, their power can be used to support the human in many capacities. The mind is the same. The mind is amazing, beautiful, and majestic; however, until the mind is tamed, it is chaotic at best when attempting to use it to support our humanness.

A horse trainer knows the strength and power of the horse; he or she honors that strength and power, and very lovingly begins to harness those qualities. The horse trainer watches and observes the horse, its obvious movements and its subtle movements. Within the watching process, they begin to play a game with each other, and over time, with loving action, the trainer begins to build a relationship with that horse. The trainer does not attempt to gain power and control over the horse through beating it into submission, but rather loves it and begins the process of showing the horse ‘cause and effect.’ The horse trainer must stay aware, alert, and conscious whenever it is working with the horse. The trainer picks and chooses the best time to work with the horse, but while working with the horse; the trainer remains focused on the task at hand. In those moments, there is nothing else in the world other than the horse and the trainer.

Self Awareness and taming the mind, is so very similar. We must stay alert; we must watch the movements of the mind, the obvious movements, and the subtle movements of the mind. Like the trainer, we sometimes let the horse run free, but the trainer does so very deliberately, and when that free time is done, he or she then goes right back into training and taming the horse. There is a consistency to the training and the taming. The trainer knows that progress can be lost if there is a wavering in the consistency.

As a person who is working with these concepts of self awareness, and taming the mind, consistency is key! Being consistent will allow you to harness that wild animal (the mind), and then begin to use its power to support you and the jobs that you are diving into. Without it, the mind will just run amuck all over you and all over your life.

Begin today to harness the power of the mind and use it for your benefit.
