For the Love of Our Pets

Yesterday we had to take our beloved Lab, Cole, to be put to sleep. It was a heart-wrenching decision that we knew we had to make. In honor of Cole, I’d like to take a moment to recognize what beautiful and loving examples and companions our pets are.

Cole showed me a lot about loving life and living with gusto. There was little that did not fascinate him. He was rambunctious and full of joy. He was also sensitive to my moods and feelings and was quick to curl up and simply sit with me if I was feeling sad or unwell. He loved purely and unconditionally. Sometimes I envied his ability to live so fully in his present moment. For Cole, life was a joyous adventure. Unlike myself, he never let thoughts about the past or worries about the future keep him from savoring the joy of now. That is, in itself, a tremendous example for us all. There is unimaginable joy and peace in each moment; sometimes we just have trouble seeing it because we are too focused on the thorns to appreciate the roses. I am fortunate to have been able to see that beautiful example of living life fully lived out in front of me every day since Cole joined our family.

How about you? As we take a break from our normal posts today to honor Cole, we’d love to hear about animals you love, who have shown you something about life. Help us today to celebrate our four-legged family members.

Much love and Namaste,
Nirish

Our house is often referred to as “the menagerie”. 2 dogs, 2 cats and a loving, precocious 5 year-old boy. Most mornings, our bed is full of all this love, with barely an inch to move. But when the world outside gets crazy, there is nowhere else I’d rather be. My pets have licked my tears, soothed my wounds and outlasted any petty relationship or biological family bullshit. They are true, steady and always based in love. They are and ever will be my first children, who have loved me at my worst and continue celebrate my very being on every day of this journey.

Kramer is my 15 year-old orange and white tabby cat,who was born in my old papasan chair. Milk hog from day day. My kitty boy. Rides around on my shoulders, steals my salads and deli meat. Now diabetic and winding down, he still rules the roost.

Taku is my three year old long-haired grey keykat. We found him under the house when he was 5 weeks old, and weighed just over a pound. Now, he’s pushing the scales near 18. He loves to play in the shower, hide behind doors, and pounce on the dogs. He loves to flatten himself out like a rug on the kitchen table, and chatter at the birds and squirrels. He lets Isak lug him around like a sack of sugar. His favorite place to sleep is curled up with the dogs.

Coutseau is my white, fluffy, teddy bear Samoyed. Abandoned in the park, we sprang him from doggie jail two years ago. I would be lost without his little howled greetings and sassy-ness. He has finished I don’t how many freshly baked cakes, by pulling them off the counter or table. When it storms, he runs and jumps in bed between Adam and I, burying his nose in an armpit or under a pillow. He loves to hug, and anyone who’s been to our house, can regale tales of being met at the door and embraced by a 65lb ball of white fur.

Foxy, is my little fuckin’ hound! She is an American dingo, who loves to dig, and wormed her way right into my heart. She is like velcro and sleeps on my feet while I work and study. At night, she never leaves my side. She was left by her owners in the yard across the street, and next week marks the one year anniversary of her capturing our hearts and taking over the household. She pulls Taku around by his head, then they poke, nose and swat at each other for hours, finally cleaning each other and taking a nap.

This family is all I ever could have hope for.
    xoxo

OH…so sorry to hear about Cole. He was a merry ol’ soul and I really loved him. I know you will miss him. Our little Ozziline brings me so much joy. She’s so full of love and kisses and curiosity and she’s just so darn soft and soothing to hold. Hugs to you, Nirish, and Leo…who is going to miss his buddy, I’m sure.
